The Pharaoh's Fortune

The Pharaoh's Fortune Bahini hated her mother for hiding the truth. She hated her uncle for banishing her mother from the kingdom. But most of all, she hated her father for his demise. For a seven-year-old girl, hate was a strong word. She didn’t even comprehend its full meaning, and yet she was experiencing it with every cell in her petite body. As she rode silently in the wagon, her mother seated in front, Bahini wondered how the life of a vizier differed from that of a scribe, as her father once was. They both contributed to the growth of Egypt, and yet one lived in the palace, while another lived in a barely stable abode. Noticing the confused look on her face, her mother spoke to her, in a very soft voice, “What is wrong, dear? You’ve been silent the whole ride. Don’t you want to know more about the palace? You always dreamt of living there.” Bahini just had a look of betrayal on her chubby face. If her mother knew she wished to live in the palace, why hadn’t she told her abo...

The Class Reunion

The Class Reunion Molly did not want the day to end. It was already a quarter to eleven, and she was supposed to be home by now. Here she was, drinking her sorrows away, or literally her money away. She did not have much, but whatever she had, she spent on alcohol these days. This was the only satisfaction money could buy for her. Molly thought back to the time when she was a kid. She used to be the top scorer, everyone’s favourite, teachers included. She was good at sports as well; being a member of her school’s swimming team and the captain of the lacrosse team. Everything was good back then. Sitting at the right end of the bar, Molly wondered where everything went wrong. Was it the time her mother died, because of which she grew depressed? Or was it the poor college she enrolled in owing to her poverty? Yes, she became the class representative, but was it even worth it? Molly wondered if her life turned out like this as a consequence of her crimes. Nah, the latter could not be...

The Doppelgangers

T h e  D o p p e l g a n g e r s The year was 2067, and the date was the 2nd of September, a Friday. The sun was glaring upon the Lemon household. Akira Lemon was still asleep, flying through the skies and swimming through the oceans that flooded her dreams. Her dog, Hiro, a two-year-old Siberian Husky, just sat beside her bed waiting for his master to open her eyes and to start the day when a knock was heard. It comprised small, regular raps showing how impatient the guest was. Mrs. Lemon appeared from the kitchen to look through the peeping hole. “Ugh, him again,” she whispered through gritted teeth and opened the door to reveal a tall man in his mid-thirties. His pearl white shone so brightly they rivaled the shine of the sun. “Hello Mrs Lemon,” the man murmured, “Would you like to help us in improving The System by giving this quick survey?” He spoke in a monotonous voice, the kind you’d expect to hear from a robot. “You can stop, you know. You guys disturb u...

The Moments They Shared

The Moments They Shared The night was at its peak when Angela realized she has been out for almost five hours. She knew her brother was waiting for her back home. But what was the point of all this? Him pretending to care for her and her pretending to show some appreciation in return to the pity Ashton had shown her. She didn't think their relationship was supposed to be known as that of siblings. Nah, she thought more along the lines of biological roommates. "I don't like the air back there, Max," Angela told her friend who was drawing stuff on the mud. "Since Mum and Dad separated, it feels suffocating in there. It feels as if I'm being a burden on Ashton." "It's been six months already, Angie," Maximus looked up from his self-proclaimed masterpiece. "I thought you said it'll be easy for you to adjust?" "Well, apparently... I was wrong. I'm not welcome there, man. He's just keeping me there for the sake of it....
